But Rodgers is convinced that Liverpool - who he described as 'brilliant' in that Anfield draw - can make up the ground to fourth; back in 1992/93, Liverpool eventually finished sixth under Graeme Souness.
Rodgers said: "Can we now challenge for the top four? Yes. Absolutely. The most important thing is that we are moving in the right direction again.
"The way we fought back to equalise with ten men (against Arsenal) says everything about the team and its character.
"This a group of players with the talent to win games, as we did when we won 11 in succession last season, and that can quickly move you up the league.
"Slowly we are getting back to where we want to be. Our performance was outstanding.
"We played better and dominated more than we did last year when we won 5-1. We had that intensity and pressing in our game but we are very disappointed with the goals we conceded.
"We were brilliant but we need to make better decisions defensively.
"We lost three one-on-one headers in the box for Arsenal's first goal. That is not about defensive organisation; that's about winning your duel."
